Summary
Surviving As The Tyrant’s Chef, tells the tale of a contemporary chef Yeon Ji-yeong, who finds herself accidentally time traveling to the Joseon dynasty during a solar eclipse. She ends up in the royal court of King Yi Heon, a young king who is dealing with a lot of trauma from his mother’s passing and is preoccupied with revenge against corrupt nobles and officials. Ji-yeong is mistaken as a suspicious outsider but later becomes the royal palace chef, after Heon is impressed with her cooking style, combining modern techniques with Han cuisine-style ingredients.
As Ji-yeong gets used to palace life and palace politics, she faces jealousy from concubine Kang Mok-ju, and plots from Prince Je Seon to take the throne. Throughout her cooking, Ji-yeong wins Yi Heon’s trust and invokes memories of happiness and warmth from his childhood, rebuking Yi Heon’s reputation as a tyrant and cold ruler. The series combines elements of romance, comedy, and political intrigue while Ji-yeong works on her survival, the safety of those around, and gambling on if she will change history or find a way back to her present.
