Summary
Gerald Dern, the first son of the Dern family, went to war in the Civil War to not bring disgrace to his father. The war has taken everything from him: his entire family has been killed in the war, and through the terrible experiences of seeing his comrades murdered, he has lost the will to live. By the end, the family fortune has been wiped out, and he is left with nothing but a ranch that is in an out-of-the-way location. He was once a war hero, the perfect heir to the Dern name, and he retreated to the ranch in hopes of killing himself.
All of Gerald’s plans are turned upside down after he meets the cowboy named Ezra. Ezra has mixed-heritage and identifies as a Native American.
“Me? I’m your devoted slave, Master.”
While claiming to be Gerald’s servant, Ezra continually steps over the boundaries and challenges him in every way. Despite the fact that Ezra is always challenging Gerald and making him feel uncomfortable, Gerald feels his heart beating once again, and he becomes excited at the thought of being in a relationship with Ezra.
“This is all his fault for making me feel this way.”
One man has lost everything and wants to kill himself. The other man will do whatever he can to keep the other man alive. This is how the love story in the wasteland is developed.
